Getting the Most From Your Breastfeeding Experience

Once you and your baby gets the hang of latching on and you are comfortable breastfeeding, you can do it pretty much anywhere, but why not make it as enjoyable as possible? For times when you are breastfeeding at home, consider creating a special space, just for you and baby.

Location, Location, Location

Any corner will do as long as you can make it yours. If you have other children to keep an eye on, or you just like being in the middle of things, you will probably want to pick a place in the family or living room. If you are all about multi-tasking, you may need a space in front of the computer or a sling so you can nurse and have both hands free. For moms who want to make breastfeeding a quiet and relaxing experience, a quiet corner in a spare room or the baby’s nursery will do the trick. This will help tremendously once your baby moves to a stage where she is easily distracted. Side-lying nursing can also allow for you both to get some rest.

Get Comfortable

A comfy chair is essential. That could mean a padded glider or rocker, an overstuffed arm chair or the corner of the couch. It is also a good idea to elevate your feet to prevent your back from becoming sore, so a footstool is a good idea. You’ll also want to have plenty of pillows on hand, both to support you and your baby. A warm throw for you is a good addition along with plenty of receiving blankets for baby.

Table for One

A little table is a handy thing to have. It is a good place to keep a glass of water or a cup of tea (Luke-warm for safety!). Other things you might want nearby include the phone, a book, or the TV clicker.

Create a Little Ambiance

Often multitasking is essential, and if feeding sessions are long, a little distraction can be welcome. But sometimes it is nice to simply let yourself sink into the breastfeeding experience and enjoy this special time with your baby. Dim the lights and maybe put on some soft music. Focus on your baby and let all those calming, nurturing, breastfeeding hormones run through you. With so much to do you may feel like you are wasting time, but remember, you are feeding and bonding with your baby and everyone needs some downtime. What could be more important than that?
