Support Healthy Lactation with Fenugreek
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean region of the world. Fenugreek is used throughout the world as a culinary spice and has been used by women for centuries as a “galactagogue” – a natural product to increase the production of breast milk. Fenugreek contains diosgenin, a plant-based estrogen, which is thought to increase milk flow in lactating women to help support breast milk production.*
Unlike other available Fenugreek supplements which can require taking up to 8 capsules per day, Fairhaven Health’s Fenugreek contains a unique blend of organic Fenugreek Seed Powder, along with a concentrated Fenugreek Seed Powder extract (10:1), delivering a dose equivalent to 2000 mg of standard fenugreek seed powder in just 2 vegetarian capsules each day.
While fenugreek has a long history of safe use as a culinary spice and an herbal galactagogue, there are a few important precautions related to fenugreek supplementation:
- Fenugreek can cause sweat and breast milk to smell like maple syrup.
- Fenugreek is not recommended for pregnant women.
- Fenugreek should be used with caution by women with allergies to peanuts.
- Fenugreek can reduce blood glucose levels. Women with diabetes should consult a physician before taking fenugreek.
- Fenugreek can, in some cases, aggravate asthma symptoms. Women with asthma should consult a physician before using fenugreek.
Wondering which supplements can be taken together?
(see our Pregnancy & Nursing Supplement Guide to find out.)
I recently started using Fenugreek to help increase my supply since my cycle returned after 6 weeks pp. I noticed a drop and every month had to supplement by using my freezer stash. When I was down to only a few bags in the freezer and realized that my cycle was just around the corner, I decided to try Fenugreek and see if I, too, would have good results. I can say with confidence that this really worked for me. I was able to increase my supply again and was able to pump some extra to build up my freezer supply again.
The great thing about this particular company is that I’m not taking 9+ pills a day. 2 capsules are equivelent to 2000mg (according to their packaging) and I knew this would work for me as I was taking 3500mg prior to using this brand.
I noticed an increase after about 4-5 days. Great for women who would like to try a natural remedy for low supply or those who may need a little extra help after returning to work and need to build up a supply.

I’ve taken fenugreek before and have always found it to be helpful in increasing my milk production, but I’ve never been a fan of how many capsules you have to take each day. When I was breastfeeding my daughter, I was LITERALLY taking 10 capsules of fenugreek each day (not fun)! That’s the primary reason I decided to go with this brand, though I also like that it’s organic. I’m pleased to report that I experienced the same increase in milk production with this product taking just 2 capsules.
