Q & A

Coenzyme Q10 for Fertility

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10 as it is often called, is a vitamin-like substance that has been used to enhance fertility both male and female for several years. Originally known for its benefits to cardiac and neurological health, CoQ10 has been the subject of considerable research into its effects on overall sperm health and egg quality.

We ingest CoQ10 naturally in our diet through the consumption of meat, fish, and certain vegetables and fruit. Present in each cell of your body, CoQ10 plays a key role in energy production. Particularly prevalent in mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, CoQ10 is a component of the electron transport chain responsible for generating energy in the cells. Levels of CoQ10 tend to diminish as you age, resulting in reduced cellular energy capacity, which has obvious fertility implications. Particularly relevant for use in enhancing fertility, CoQ10 also functions as an antioxidant, decreasing the damaging effects of free radicals on the reproductive system.

CoQ10 & Male Fertility

A number of studies have examined the role of CoQ10 in relation to male fertility and have found it to play a key role. One study published in Fertility & Sterility revealed that men with lower-than-normal levels of CoQ10 in their seminal fluid tend to have sperm with low motility. Fortunately, the study also found that by supplementing with CoQ10 (200 mg/day), subjects experienced a significant increase in sperm motility. Another study published in the Journal of Andrology examined the results on sperm health on men supplementing with 300 mg of CoQ10 daily. In addition to a significant increase in sperm motility, this study also indicated a benefit to both sperm count and morphology.

CoQ10 & Female Fertility

Experts theorize that the powerful energy producing activity of CoQ10 is the mechanism by which this ingredient benefits female fertility. As we age and our naturally occurring levels of CoQ10 diminish, the high energy consuming processes associated with fertilization and embryo development become less efficient. A study published in the Journal of Fertility and Sterility found that older women taking up to 600 mg of CoQ10 daily experienced an improvement in both egg quality and subsequent fertilization rates.

I am over 40 and am excited about the opportunity of TTC again. I have 3 kids already and am excited about adding a 4th. We have tried to conceive in the past few years and no success. However, after trying the products I can tell a difference in my cycle and ovulation. In my younger days my cycle was 31 days and for the past 4 years it was 27-28 days. Yes, I calender EVERY month. After being on Q10 for the past month my cycle has returned to 31 days exactly! AM arrival like always....awesome! I was sad at 1st because I was hopeful we had conceived but after calming down and thinking about it, I believe our big fat positive results are on the way soon! I am very excited and hopeful. I hope going from a 28 day cycle to 31 days isn't negative in chances of conceiving. I am still on Q10 so we will see what the future holds.
Too few pills in 1 bottle. Buy multiple as to not run out.

helped me fall pregnant
June 28, 2013
I've never taken pills to help me fall pregnant and don't like to take them for anything really (not even aspirin). My girlfriend told me about maca and coenzymq10 though and recomended that we try it since my hubby is on the more mature side (he's 44, I'm 32) and I have a history of irregular menses. We both took both products for just over a month. It wasn't easy getting him to take the pills since he hates pills too (I know - we're quite a pair). TMI, but we both noticed a big difference in the sexual interest and performance department. I noticed quite a bit more natural lubrication. I also had the most positive ovulation test ive ever had while taking these products. Usually my ovulation tests never get very dark lines but this time it was really strong! We had a little "staycation" in our apartment and did the deed several times (sorry). Long story short, it worked and we're expecting our first baby!! I really think these products helped.
