BabyIt Perineal Massage and Postpartum Recovery Gel Washington July 5, 2017
I used this product to do the perineal massage for several months before giving birth. I am a first time mom, and had every intention of delivering vaginally. To my surprise, my baby decided to come via Caesarean section. The product is not scented and I did not have any reactions when using it in the vaginal area.

Nobody likes to tear when they give birth. After two previous births where I had second degree tears, I decided to try a new product in hopes that this might reduce the chance of happening a third time. Mamas, the BabyIt massage and comfort gel is where it's at. I'm so glad this new product is out now because I wish I had it years ago. What makes this gel worthwhile? - There's no junk in it. No parabens, no oils, nothing to potentially mess up the delicate balance going on inside your body. I'm picky about what goes on and in my body, so to know that this product is free of harmful substances was an instant perk and made me want to try it. - It's smooth, it's not sticky, and there's nothing residual that stays behind to make you feel gross. The product completely absorbs into the skin - after using it for its various purposes, my hands are always extra soft! It also has the most mild scent in the world - you can barely detect it, and what scent there is, it's light and non offensive. So how did it work for me when it comes to birthing the third time around? Excellent! My baby descended very quickly and she was born in a mere three pushes. I had the tiniest, most slight tear and did not require any stitches for it at all. This is a MAJOR difference from my second degree tears and stitches in the past. I healed so much more quickly this time around and had a noticeable difference in my postpartum comfort. The BabyIt gel also works for your baby's skin too! That was interesting to me, and I had quite a bit left over in the bottle, so I was curious to see what this would really do for my babe's skin. And since the ingredients are junk-free, I was willing to try. I think my before and after pictures speak for itself! My baby was starting to get really dry skin and it was even going a little raw. One application of the gel and you couldn't even see dry skin anymore at all and her skin was back to being the super baby soft silky skin that it should be. If I wasn't convinced I liked BabyIt from using it prenatally, this definitely sealed the deal. I'll be continuing to use the BabyIt gel as lotion for my baby because it worked THAT well.

Baby It Perineal Massage and Postpartum Recovery Gel

A 2-in-1 before and after childbirth necessity

If you aren't yet familiar with perineal massage, don't feel bad - unfortunately, you won't find perineal massage mentioned on many Pregnancy To-Do lists. But, no need to worry, its never too late to learn about this beneficial, ancient practice of daily massage that aims to stretch and relax the birth canal before delivery. When performed in the last several weeks of pregnancy, studies show that perineal massage can decrease: 1) the incidence of trauma to perineal tissues; 2) the need for episiotomy, during childbirth, and 3) post partum pain during sex .

If your due date is approaching, be sure to add daily perineal massage to your own Pregnancy To-Do list. And, to help you accomplish this important goal, we are proud to introduce Baby It - the first and only isotonic, paraben-free, and pH-balanced gel specifically designed to be used during perineal massage.

And, once you've delivered your beautiful bundle of joy, use BabyIt to soothe sore, swollen, bruised, and healing tissues. BabyIt can also be used to moisturize and calm your baby's dry skin.

What is Perineal Massage and Why Do I Need to Do It?

First things first, let's talk a bit about our anatomy. In women, the perineum includes the area at the back of your vagina and vulva and goes to your anus and rectum. Specifically, the perineum includes the back portion of the birth canal.

It is easy to go through life without thinking much about your perineum. However, without these rigid, firm perineal tissues that create a strong pelvic floor, we would not be able to walk upright, and we would pee every time we cough or sneeze. And, while these tissues need to be intact and strong, they also need to be flexible enough to stretch during childbirth to allow the baby to move through the birth canal. Unfortunately, the perineal tissues of many women lack flexibility and aren't able to stretch during delivery. As a result, many women experience perineal trauma during childbirth. The perineal trauma can cause tears, or the need for an episiotomy (a surgical cut), both of which may require suturing to heal, and they often cause scarring and pain after childbirth, which can negatively impact future comfort and sexual function. Some tears can even result in incontinence of gas, urine or feces.

The good news is that just 5 minutes of perineal massage each day during the last several weeks of pregnancy has been shown in numerous clinical studies to decrease the incidence of trauma to perineal tissues, as well as the need for episiotomy, during childbirth; and the incidence of post partum pain during sex. In fact, perineal massage is commonly used in many European and other countries specifically to optimize healthy birthing outcomes.

The goal of perineal massage is to make the tissues at the back side of the vaginal opening flexible and supple, so that they naturally expand during childbirth. Perineal massage increases the flexibility of the perineum and decreases its resistance during labor, which enables the birth canal to stretch at delivery without tearing or requiring an episiotomy. You can perform perineal massage on yourself or your partner can do it with you. And, again, a few minutes every day is all that is necessary to help these tissues stretch and relax in preparation for childbirth. Using BabyIt can make perineal massage more comfortable and help to hydrate perineal tissues so they remain soft and supple.

For more information about the research supporting perineal massage and detailed information about how to perform perineal massage, read Dr. Joanna Ellington's two-part article called Decreasing Damage "Down Under" During Childbirth: Perineal Massage Made Easy, Part 1 and Part 2.

A Message from Dr. Joanna Ellington, Inventor of BabyIt

Anna Davis, Ph.D., RYT

"I used perineal massage during my pregnancies knowing that it is clinically proven to decrease the chance of tearing during childbirth. I invented BabyIt's isotonic formula because I knew oils and other leading gels can cause vaginal irritation and infections. Along with BabyIt's patented formula, I have worked to create unique, easy to follow instructions for making perineal massage successful for every woman. When I was trying to learn the technique with my first pregnancy, the instructions I was given didn't work for us as a couple. We later learned how to make the massage a bonding time for us!"

BabyIt is IsoTonic and Paraben-Free - Providing Gentle Moisturizing for Perineal Tissues

Using BabyIt during perineal massage helps to gently moisturize perineal tissues. BabyIt is isotonic - which means that BabyIt has a salt concentration that matches the salt levels of the cells in your perineum. Sexual lubricants suggested for perineal massage are hypertonic (with too high of a salt concentration relative to perineal tissues), and cause water to be sucked out of the cells of the perineum. This forced movement of water can change cell shape and biology, leading to irritation and tissue damage. Unlike these other products, BabyIt's isotonic formula won't pull water out of cells. The abnormal salt levels and chemical ingredients in lubricants lead to increased irritation potential for sensitive mucosal cells (as shown in published studies). BabyIt provides mild, balanced hydration of your cells during perineal massage.

Also, BabyIt is made without parabens, or other harsh preservatives - it is naturally preserved using a nature-identical compound found in roses.

How Often Should I Use BabyIt, and How Much Do I Use?

Using BabyIt during perineal massage helps to moisturize and condition your perineal tissues.

Starting in your 34th week of pregnancy, begin your daily perineal massage routine. Remember, it only takes 5 minutes a day of perineal massage to help your perineal tissues stretch and relax in preparation for childbirth. Click here for complete, detailed instructions on how to perform perineal massage on yourself or with a partner.

Of course, daily perineal massage in the last few weeks of pregnancy is ideal, but don't get discouraged if you miss a day - just pick up your routine the next day. After about a week or so of regular perineal massage, you should notice increased stretchiness and less burning or discomfort during your daily massage.

For best softening and stretching, ensure that you use enough product to keep your tissues moist through the massage. The amount of BabyIt required, and the need to re-apply during the massage, will vary for each woman. We recommend starting with a heaping teaspoon of product and re-applying as needed.

Why Should I Use BabyIt for Perineal Massage Instead of Almond Oil or My Regular Lubricant?

If you search for information about perineal massage on the web, you might find that some folks recommend using almond oil or sexual lubricants for perineal massage. Unfortunately, coating the vagina and perineal tissues with oils tend to increase rates of vaginal infections and some oils have high levels of free radicals (due to oxidation of the oil) which can cause inflammation and irritation. This is the last thing a woman wants when trying to soften and relax her perineal tissues! Additionally, clinical studies have found that almond oil increases pre-term labor and oils in general can cause vaginal infections. BabyIt is the first and only product designed specifically for use during perineal massage. BabyIt is isotonic, paraben-free, and pH balanced for pregnancy.

Will BabyIt Help After Delivery?

Even the quickest and smoothest of deliveries is bound to result in sore and swollen tissues, and the discomfort after delivery can be more severe if there was any tearing or an episiotomy was required. BabyIt's gentle, hydrating formula provides soothing comfort for postpartum recovery. Use it on perineal tissues as a calming balm, or apply it to gauze or toilet tissue to make a gentle gel wipe for cleansing, and as a moisturizer to keep pads or clothes from sticking to healing tissues. The formula contains naturally-derived antioxidants and humectants that soften, soothe and support post partum recovery.

Can I Use BabyIt as a Moisturizer on My Baby's Dry Skin?

BabyIt is gentle enough to use as a moisturizer for your baby's delicate skin. In fact, it was shown in studies to have no irritation potential, whereas several leading brands of baby lotions caused moderate irritation. BabyIt's pH matches baby's skin, where as many other baby care products have too high a pH and can cause irritation. The formula contains naturally-derived humectants that soften and soothe skin.

Great product for soothing skin irritation

Baby It has really helped with my dry skin and other irritation as I am sensitive to most moisturizers, gels, etc. It has a nice consistency but does have to be applied often as it evaporates/absorbs quickly.

Thankful for BabyIt!

Let's be honest... Nothing is fun about perineal massage. But it is definitely necessary to help prepare your body to give birth. I started doing perineal massage at the directive of my midwife at 34 weeks. Having a product that I knew was safe, and formulated for this purpose took away my concern of infection or irritation to an already daunting process. I was diligent and practiced perineal massage at least 3-4 times a week, working my way up to about 3 minutes towards the end. I am happy to report that after over 26 hours in labor, I gave birth naturally without tearing. I highly recommend this product- and have used it postpartum to help provide relief to swollen and sore vaginal tissues.
Pros:
formulated for this purpose- unlike oils (olive oil or almond oil) which can cause an increase in your risk for infection BUT are commonly recommended?! ) no irritation from use can be used postpartum
